Comprehension
Comprehension can be based on fiction or non-fiction themes. If the passage has a title this can give your child a good idea of what the text is about. When reading comprehension passages, it’s important to get a feel for the passage and really understand what the text is saying in order to answer the questions. If your child isn’t sure, then encourage them to read back over the text.
Aside from the understanding of vocabulary, there are three basic types of questions your child is likely to be asked in a comprehension task:
Retrieval: For retrieval tasks, the answer is given in the text. Your child may need to do some calculations to get the answer but all of the information should be stated.
Example: If a passage says that a person was born in July 1880 and died in September 1940, a question could be “What year did the person die” (a. 1940) or “how old were they when they died” (a. 59).
